Everyone should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Below is a list of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time.

Supply Kit Checklist

Assemble the supplies you may need in an evacuation or shelter. Store your kit in an easy to carry container such as a backpack or duffle bag.

  • Radio and flashlight (battery powered and extra batteries)
  • 3-day supply of water (1 gallon per person each day, store in sealed unbreakable containers; Identify the storage date and replace ev¬ery 6 months)
  • Soap/alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Food, non-perishable (2 week supply)
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Pet food
  • First aid kit (with extra prescription medications)
  • Blankets/sleeping bags
  • Extra pair of eye glasses
  • Credit cards and small amounts of cash
  • Extra set of car keys
  • Family physician list (with medical history)
  • Clothing, rain gear and shoes
  • Garbage bags
  • Important family information
  • Special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members (disposable diapers)
  • Over the counter medication for fever/pain
  • Tissues/toilet paper/feminine hygiene products
