Make a Plan

Where would your family meet in the event a disaster struck your neighborhood?  Who would you contact as a point of reference to make sure you knew everyone was safe?  What medications are each member of your family currently taking?

It is important to think about questions like this that may arise in an emergency situation. 

Create a family emergency plan today: 

The next time disaster strikes, you may not have much time to act. Being prepared is the best response to any threat. Learn how to protect yourself and cope with disaster by planning ahead. This list will help you get started.

  • Meet with household members to discuss what to do in emergencies such as fire, severe weather, interrupted utility service, chemical spills or a public health emergency.
  • Draw a floor plan of your home. Mark two escape routes from each room.
  • Teach household members how to turn off water, gas and electricity.
  • Learn home treatments for the flu.
  • Discuss frequent hand washing and other ways to decrease the risk of infection.
  • Instruct household members to turn on the radio for emergency information.
  • Pick one out of state and one local friend or relative to call if separated during a disaster.
  • Keep important family records in water and fire proof container.
