H5N1 (Bird Flu)

H5N1- Influenza A virus subtype

H5N1 is a strain of the influenza virus that occurs naturally among birds including chickens, turkeys and ducks. The virus is very contagious among birds, and can be deadly to them. Human infections of H5N1 are very rare. Additionally, person-to-person transmission of H5N1 has been reported rarely. The majority of humans that become infected with H5N1 have caught the virus from coming into contact with poultry or surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Since 2003, more than 500 cases have been reported from various locations including Asia, Africa, Egypt, Europe, Indonesia, Near East, the Pacific, and Vietnam. H5N1 has not been detected in birds or people in the United States.
