Flu and Pregnancy

Pregnant women who become ill with the flu are at a greater risk for developing complications. This risk increases because the immune system undergoes a lot of changes during pregnancy. Complications can include bacterial pneumonia and dehydration, which are serious and can be fatal. Pregnant women are much more likely to be hospitalized for complications from the flu than non-pregnant women. The best step to take at protecting you and your baby is to become vaccinated. The flu vaccine is safe for pregnant women. The vaccination contains no live flu viruses and has been tested with no harmful effects on the fetus.
