What are immunizations?

Immunizations will help develop and strengthen your child’s immune system so that later in life he or she will be able to effectively fight off disease. Immunized children are protected during their childhood against potentially dangerous diseases such as: Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella, Chickenpox, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae Type B, Polio, Influenza, and Pneumococcal disease. An additional benefit of having your child immunized is that he or she will not miss school or day care due to a preventable illness. This means that parents will also miss fewer days of work.

Where can I take my child for well child care if I have no insurance?

Going to the doctor before your child gets sick is called a “well child” visits and are very important part of a child’s health.  Although immunizations are important, it is crucial that your child receives medical care such as routine screening tests and physicals by their doctor. Simply taking your child into a clinic for shots is not enough to ensure that your child develops normally.

Does the Cleveland Department of Public Health (CDPH) offer information to medical providers?

Yes, the CDPH educates local providers on immunization updates and other pertinent immunization information through a program called Maximizing Office Based Immunizations (MOBI).  Read more about MOBI below.

Does my pediatrician know about immunizations?

Maximizing Office Based Information (MOBI) is a statewide program that has been developed for pediatrician immunization education.  MOBI is a quality improvement program and focuses on improving immunization rates among two years olds within office based practices.  The program focus provides information on New Immunization Recommendations, New Vaccines, Changes in the Childhood Immunization Schedule, and much more.

Children living within the City of Cleveland are under immunized.  The introduction of new vaccines and changes in recommendation challenge health care providers to strive to keep children up to date and immunized in a timely manner.  The MOBI program is continuously updated and adapted to the particular needs of individual health care providers.

The City of Cleveland offers the MOBI program to all providers within the City of Cleveland.  The MOBI program and materials are free of charge to providers and all participants.  The City of Cleveland also offers to perform a chart assessment that is free and confidential.

The program will offer Continuing Education Credits and Continuing Medical Education Credits to staff.   The problem includes: AFIX (Assessment and Feedback), and Educational - Maximizing Office Based Information (MOBI).   AFIX is only provided if chart assessment is performed.
